It’s a long winded story and not to bore you till heaven’s no more so let me give you the cliffnotes and basically what this blog will be about.
I started gaming in the depth’s of the 1980’s (yes, I am old, sue me (please don’t)) and I started like most of the gamers back then with now maybe not to well known treasures like ‘The secret of Monkey Island’, ‘Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis’, ‘Summer Games’, ‘Rick Dangerous’ and plenty more.
I started on an Amiga500 and later ugraded to a pc (which I begged my mom for what felt like an eternity). This was until I started to get interested in Mac’s and when I bought my first Macbook in 2009, I was reducing my gaming habit, since on Mac OS there wasn’t Steam yet and the games that were available were rare.
That’s when I started to get interested in console gaming. I did have a GameBoy before and even an Atari Lynx and my parents were getting a PS2 for my younger siblings, but I really started when I got myself a PS3 for the brand new HDTV I got for christmas.
I was happily playing on the PS3, later got a PS4, I bought a 3DS because my girlfriend at the time convinced me and I fell in love with Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. The Wii I got was never played much, but the PSP I got used was also a very fun handheld I loved to play on.
I switched back from the Mac to a Windows laptop about 2019, a regular Thinkpad, that is still capable of running some Visual Novels that I like, but the possibilities of Steam were amazing for someone like me that wasn’t in the ‘game’ (pun most definitely intended) for like years.
I started out playing Minecraft at the time on my phone and got convinced to try it on my pc, which I did and surprisingly even my old laptop was able to run it quite well.
Now the thing is, that I never really was someone that was hungry for frames per second, so the mid 30 frames I had on my laptop was perfectly fine for me. But when I joined my first server and a bit later the server I still play on it got a bit more intense. When we got into our first modded experience and my frames dropped to low 20’s down to like 12 frames per second, I was getting giddy to get a new laptop.
So I did what most of us would do … I bought a Switch.
Don’t judge me. It’s a nice console and I really like the handheld aspect of it. Since I was traveling for work quite a bit, it was a very good solution for the time and I really have a lot of fun playing on it.
But I did get a new laptop too about 7 months later.
And that’s where things started to go awry so to speak. Because I ordered the laptop with out an operating system. I thought I was fine installing Windows on my own, since I am a little bit tech savvy. Little did I know what I was in for.
Because when I booted it up, Windows told me that there was no drive in my laptop. Which I knew wasn’t the truth, but anyways.
After a long time talking with the vendor and the manufacturer I decided to scrap all of that and do the only reasonable thing. I installed Linux.
And there I was, not knowing anything. I had some time with Linux, somewhen 2008/2009 but it wasn’t really usable for me back then. But now I had no other choice in my mind, because I really didn’t want to give up.
So I googled for ‘best linux distro for gaming’ and landed on PopOS. I installed it and went with it for like 2 days. It’s a great distro, but I wanted something different.
So I did the next absolutely reasonable thing. I installed Arch. With i3 as a window manager. For my gaming laptop.
For all of you now crying in agony, don’t worry. It works. Still. Perfectly fine. And I can game to my hearts content.
Now, what are you in for?
This blog should be about things I have learned in my time gaming. It is about my experiences, my opinions about any- and everything I am thinking about and what I find worth talking about
I am hoping to show you that you can achieve things you set your mind to, even if they do not seem possible at first. That it matters, that you don’t give up. And that it’s dangerous to go alone. So take this. :)
And if you are now in for the ride, I hope you enjoy and have a good time. And maybe even learn something new.
